On the 28th April 1942, the HMS Edinburgh left Murmansk, commanding the escort attached to convoy QP11, containing 17 ships.
The Edinburgh was loaded with 4,570 kilograms of gold belonging to the Soviet Union. The gold was a payment for wartime materials and equipment supplied by the USA.
On April 30, off the coast of Norway, HMS Edinburgh was attacked
by the German submarine U-456 and two torpedoes hit the target.
On May 2, Convoy QP-11 removed the crew of the Edinburgh and the ship sank, and thus 465 bars of gold went to the bottom.
In 1981, as a result of two unique operations at a depth of 270 meters, the divers
raised 451 bars of gold. But 5 ingots were never found.
The rescuers received 45% of the salvaged gold. The rest was divided
between Britain and the Soviet Union in the ratio of 1 to 2.
